The match was very even in the first half with perhaps Athlone shading the possession stakes. Both sides were guilty of poor shooting in front of goals and this resulted in a halt-time score 1-3 a piece. Shannon Gaels started the second half well playing attacking football and scored a couple of pts. However Athlone rallied the storm and hit Shannon Gaels scoring 2-2 in a purple patch. This eventually finished the match as a contest. Athlone scored two more goals to put the icing on the cake while Shannon Gaels added another pt.
