Tang v Athlone TANG 0.16 ATHLONE 1.08 DIV 1 LEAGUE TANG v ATHLONE ON SUN 25th The day on Sunday started off good and only got better for the tang team and supporters as tang dispatched Athlone in joe fox memorial park to kick start their div.1 campaine .After being denied points by shamrocks and the downs tang players seem to have learnt the hard lessons handed out in the previous games. Tang started this game from the throw in but it was athlone who took first blood on the five minute mark. Tang sharp shooter aiden burke leveled two minutes later with his own free from the 21 metre mark. Both teams exchanged wides after this.Then aiden pointed a free after good work from william flanagen winning a long high punt from tang midfielder colm conlon only to be fouled by the athlone full back. Athlone then clawed back two after strong work and play by damien kelly around the middle of the park. At this stage the game was physical but never dirty as both teams battled hard to try and gain supremacy much to the delight of the supporters as excellent football was being played by both teams. Martin Rock added another point at this stage from play.Two minutes later his brother john scored a point any forward would be proud of after a surging run from his half back position.Athlones Joe Fallon added a fine free kick taken off the ground a skill not seen often enough in today's game.Alan Higgins came close after the kick out and in the closing minuets of this half it was all tang and martin rock in particular as he notched up three fine points from play.So at the break it was tang holding the lead 0-07 to athlone,s 0-04 As was to be expected athlone rallied in the second half with intense pressure right from the start gaining them a point from play.A wide followed as the town side increased the effort even more and smelling blood athlone pushed for goal. A high hopeful ball kicked in to the tang area, broken away from the full forward by keiran duncan only to fall to a free athlone man.Micheal Galvin in the tang goal reacted fastest and advanced bravely to narrow the angle and saved well diving to his left only for the rebound to be scrambled over the tang goal line. And so on the kick out it was time to see if tang could rise to the challenge and rise they did with players in all sections improving their effort.Aiden Burke and Martin Rock notched up two apiece Dean Reddin on for Owen Coughlan added another but the excellent free taking of Athlones Fallon kept the town team close and the tang half and full back lines had to watch their discipline as not to allow him pull it back further. Aiden Burke added three from play after good work from colm conlon and naill bannon in the tang midfeild whose work rate was outstanding on the day.Tangs last point came from Dean Reddin a long high curling shot taken under pressure that slipped inside the athlone upright to finish proceedings. And so as i said the day started brightly in tang and finished even better with two div.1 points in the bag.
